A retiring National Parks ranger takes a final journey north to reflect on the novel that inspired him and search for hope in the face of climate change.
Inspired by his favorite novel, The Lord of the Rings, Peter Christian became a U.S. National Parks ranger in 1994 and has been patrolling and protecting the vast wilderness of the country’s northernmost state ever since. During his 30 years of service in Alaska, he has witnessed glaciers recede and ecosystems devolve as the planet’s rising temperature becomes more devastating every year. There in the far north, the Shadow of climate change stretches ever more across the land that Peter is sworn to protect. How, he asks himself daily, does one go on in the face of despair? As Peter embarks on a final journey to confront the Shadow’s source on the northern coast of the state, he looks back to the novel that inspired him and searches for hope in the fight against climate change.
